Here’s a breakdown from Coach Lowe on how the upcoming season will go

Since ODCS didn’t have enough players for an 11 man team for the 2015 season, head coach Ray Lowe made the decision to switch to an 8 man football for the 2016 season. 8 man football teams are frequently found among smaller (almost exclusively) private schools. With less players, some of these differences need to be explained!

Generally, the three positions absent in the 8-man offense are 2 offensive tackles and a wide receiver. The defense plays with 2 fewer linebackers and 1 less lineman.

To fix the issue of six fewer players on the field, the width of the field is lowered to 40-yards-wide. The field is also 13 1/3-yards narrower than the 53 1/3-yard eleven-man field. Most eight-man league’s choose to have 100-yard field lengths, but others prefer an 80 yard long field.

With the change in the amount of players on the field and the shortened length of the field, 8 man football games typically have 20 minute halves and a 5 minute halftime. Other gameplay changes include an increase in trick plays. Since the games are  normally fast paced, teams try to catch their opponents off guard frequently and go for the quick strike.
