The Man Behind the Award Winning Films of ODCS: Owen Klea!
The camera is sitting on a rig, surrounded by different pieces of equipment that all have a purpose. Owen Klea is preparing to film another scene, making sure everything is set up correctly before he starts recording. While most high school students are not working with professional filmmaking equipment, Owen has spent years building his own style and learning how to make his projects look as cinematic as possible.
Owen Klea is a student filmmaker and indie tech builder who makes films with Pogger Productions. His main focus is creating cinematic films with a much smaller budget than a typical movie production. Instead of letting the lack of a huge budget stop him, Owen works with the equipment and skills he has to create the look he wants.
Owen has already worked on several different films, including Lightfall, Period 8, and Deadbolt. HIs work on these projects have earned him awards from the Patriot Film Festival, including Film of the Year and Best Director for Lightfall. These projects have helped him develop his own style of filmmaking and show how much work goes into his productions.
One of the biggest parts of Owen’s filmmaking is the equipment he uses. He builds custom camera rigs specifically for his films instead of simply using a basic camera. His setups can include different pieces of equipment that help him control the camera and get the shot he wants. Watching him setup the camera shows how much preparation can go into something that might only appear on screen for a few seconds.
Owen’s work also goes beyond filming. He builds web apps, works with 3D printing, and creates custom technology that can help with his projects. These approaches make his filmmaking more hands-on because he is not only directing the scenes, but is also working on some of the tools and equipment involved in making them.
When asked about this filmmaking process, Owen said, “filmmaking is such an important part of my life, seeing a face through a lens, it’s something that’s interested me since I was 6 years old”. His approach shows that filmmaking for him is not just about pointing a camera at something and pressing record. There is planning, equipment, and problem-solving involved before the final film is finished.
Owen’s collaborators also get to see this process from a different perspective. Owen Wall, star of Deadbolt and Lightfall, provides another view sharing “after starring in his most recent project, you can tell how deeply Owen (Klea) cares about his craft. He’s willing to push himself just as much as I was pushed as an actor. His goal is to make the best product possible.” Owen Klea is very dedicated to his work, and we all look forward to his next film, Outbound, due out this Spring at the Patriot Film Festival.
